Functional Roles of Inductors in Electronic Circuits

Inductors serve multiple functional roles in circuit design:
(1) Current opposition:
The induced voltage in an inductor opposes changes in current flow. Based on frequency characteristics, inductors are categorized into high-frequency and low-frequency chokes.
(2) Resonance and tuning:
In LC parallel circuits, inductors and capacitors determine resonant frequency. At resonance, inductive and capacitive reactances cancel each other, minimizing impedance and enabling frequency selection.
(3) Choke operation:
Inductors suppress undesired alternating currents in power and signal paths. They are commonly applied in rectifier circuits for smoothing DC output.
(4) Filtering role:
Combined with capacitors, inductors form filter networks that reduce ripple components in rectified signals, improving DC stability.
(5) Oscillation generation:
Inductors participate in oscillator circuits that convert DC into periodic AC waveforms, including sine, square, and sawtooth signals across a broad frequency spectrum.
