In power filter design,common-mode chokesare essential components for noise suppression. These chokes offer the advantage of high inductance and compact size compared to differential-mode chokes. However, one of the most important aspects to consider during design is leakage inductance, which is essentially the differential-mode inductance.
Leakage develops when the winding of the choke is not tightly wound or fully looped, leading to magnetic flux leakage. This leakage increases the differential-mode inductance, which can cause the choke to become inefficient if not accounted for properly. Designers need to calculate and minimize leakage inductance to achieve the best performance.
