How Common-Mode Chokes Address Differential-Mode Interference: The Role of Leakage

Common-mode chokes are often used in power filter designs to suppress common-mode noise in circuits. Their efficiency is attributed to their unique winding structure, which cancels out magnetic fields from common-mode signals. However, one challenge in designing these chokes is controlling the leakage inductance, or differential-mode inductance.
Leakage occurs when the magnetic flux escapes from the core due to gaps in the winding or improper core design. This results in a deviation from zero magnetic field, leading to interference in differential-mode signals. To avoid this, careful consideration is needed in choke design to balance common-mode and differential-mode filtering.
