March 15, 2026 Equinix, a leading global data center operator, announced a companywide initiative to integrate advanced toroidal inductor components into uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems across more than 50 facilities worldwide, aiming to cut energy usage by 15% by 2030. Data centers operate 24/7, and even small efficiency improvements in power conversion equipment translate into substantial cost and carbon savings.
Traditional UPS inductors suffer from high hysteresis loss and significant heat generation during peak loads, reducing overall system efficiency and shortening service life. Equinix’s engineering team tested multiple inductor types and confirmed that the toroidal inductor—featuring a closed magnetic circuit and evenly distributed flux—delivers 12% lower power loss and 20% less heat generation compared to standard Ecore inductors.
The toroidal inductor also offers a compact footprint that simplifies integration into space constrained UPS units. The first phase of deployment began in Singapore and the United States in Q1 2026, with full global rollout targeted for completion by 2028. Equinix’s sustainability director stated that adopting high efficiency toroidal inductor technology is a critical step toward achieving net zero carbon emissions and enhancing the reliability of digital infrastructure.
