Data Center Operator Adopts Vertical Toroidal Inductors to Cut Energy Consumption

June 30, 2025 – Equinix, a global data center provider, revealed plans to deploy vertical toroidal inductors in its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems across 50+ facilities worldwide. The move is part of Equinix’s goal to reduce its data centers’ energy usage by 15% by 2030.

Traditional UPS inductors suffer from high hysteresis loss, especially during peak load hours. Equinix’s tests with a vertical toroidal inductor from Texas Instruments found a 12% reduction in power waste. “Data centers run 24/7, so even small efficiency gains add up,” said Lisa Davis, Equinix’s sustainability director. “The vertical toroidal inductor’s toroidal core distributes magnetic flux evenly, lowering heat generation and extending the UPS’s lifespan by 3–5 years.” The first installations will start in Singapore and the U.S. in Q3 2025, with full deployment completed by 2027.
