Aerospace Company Certifies Vertical Toroidal Inductor for Satellite Power Systems

May 18, 2025 – Boeing Satellite Systems has received NASA certification for a lightweight vertical toroidal inductor, marking a milestone for space-grade power electronics. The component, developed with Colorado-based Coilcraft, meets NASA’s strict radiation resistance and temperature stability standards (-55°C to +125°C).

Satellite power systems require inductors that are both compact and durable, as space is limited and repair is impossible. “Our vertical toroidal inductor weighs 40% less than the cylindrical inductors we previously used,” said Dr. Raj Patel, Boeing’s satellite power systems lead. “Its vertical design also simplifies integration with other components, reducing assembly time by 20%.” The inductor will be used in Boeing’s next series of communication satellites, set to launch in 2027.
