Differentiating Common Mode Chokes from Differential Mode Chokes

Common mode chokes and differential mode chokes are two distinct types of inductors used for different purposes in electronic systems. While common mode chokes attenuate unwanted interference signals in symmetrical signal currents, differential mode chokes are primarily used for filtering differential mode signals.

Common mode chokes are wound with windings in opposite directions on a core. They effectively cancel out magnetic fields generated by symmetrical signal currents, reducing interference. On the other hand, differential mode chokes are designed with windings in the same direction, which allows them to filter differential mode signals while allowing common mode signals to pass through unaffected.
