Common mode chokes are vital components used for filtering electromagnetic interference (EMI) in various electronic systems such as switching power supplies, frequency converters, welding machines, and communication equipment like ISDN. These chokes are designed with windings wound in opposite directions on a core.
The primary function of common mode chokes is to attenuate unwanted interference signals. When symmetrical signal currents flow through the chokes, the magnetic fields they generate balance each other, resulting in no significant effect. However, in the presence of unbalanced currents, these magnetic fields do not cancel out, and the inductor's impedance absorbs the interference signals, thus reducing their impact.
Achieving good attenuation characteristics with common mode chokes requires maximizing impedance and extending the frequency range as much as possible. The attenuation properties are influenced by factors such as core permeability, winding configuration, and the material used. Different frequency ranges necessitate varying numbers of turns and specific winding distributions to optimize attenuation.
