February 17, 2025 – SunPower, a leading solar energy company, announced that its new Maxeon 7 solar inverters will use vertical toroidal inductors to boost energy conversion efficiency. The inverters, which convert DC power from solar panels to AC power for homes, now achieve 98.5% efficiency—up from 97.8% with the previous model.
“Solar inverters lose energy during conversion, so every 0.1% gain translates to more savings for homeowners,” said Dr. Priya Srinivasan, SunPower’s chief technology officer. “The vertical toroidal inductor’s low series resistance minimizes power loss, even when sunlight intensity varies.” SunPower worked with inductor manufacturer TDK to develop a custom component that fits the Maxeon 7’s compact design. The inverters will launch in North America in June 2025, with a global rollout planned for 2026.
