Key Parameters in Choosing Common Mode Choke Filters

When choosing a common mode choke filter, understanding the key parameters such as rated current, rated voltage, and cut-off frequency is crucial. The rated current is the working current that flows through the filter. If the power line filter's operating current exceeds this value, it can overheat and degrade low-frequency filtering performance due to inductance saturation. This leads to reduced actual inductance. Thus, it is advisable to set the rated current value to 1.5 times the actual current to ensure a margin for safety.
The rated voltage should be determined based on whether the wires are subject to high-voltage impacts like electrostatic discharge or electromagnetic pulses. If the wires are exposed to such conditions, the rated voltage of the filter should account for these impacts, ensuring a sufficient safety margin. For cables exposed to the external environment, considering these high-voltage impacts is even more critical.
The cut-off frequency is another vital parameter. It must ensure that the filter's passband covers the signal's bandwidth, allowing the device to operate normally while filtering out unnecessary high-frequency interference. For analog signals, the cutoff frequency should be greater than the signal bandwidth. For digital pulse signals, it can be set to 1/tr, where tr is the pulse's rise/fall time. In the case of periodic pulse signals, 15 times the pulse repetition frequency can serve as the cutoff frequency.
